Solferino memorial competiton
On
24 June, 1859 French-Sardinian troops clashed with the
troops of Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy on the plain next
to Solferino, in Northern Italy. A Swiss merchant, Henry
Durant started to make arrangements to look after the
wounded in the nearby Castiglione after he heard that
the number of wounded in the battle was over 20 thousand.
After returning home to Switzerland Durant wrote a book
in remembrance of Solferino, in which he urged that
the soldiers wounded in a battlefield and the nurses
looking after them be considered neutral. In 1864 Durant
with his three compatriots founded the Red Cross International
committee, which was the base and the beginning of today's
worldwide movement of Red Cross.
It is the six time that a memorial competition has been
held in the memory of the wounded and it makes us remember
not only the wounded at Solferino but all those who
have been wounded in wars since then.
This
year the competition was held in Castiglione, where
there were 21 teams to compete.
The competitors had to give evidence of their knowledge
at 10 stations. The tasks were selected by the organisers
to test human skills, professional theoretical and practical
knowledge thoroughly..
Let's see some of the tasks:
- Rescue from water,
- Getting through ambulance test track,
- Searching with dogs
- Rescue of patient with spinal injuries in extreme
conditions
- Rescue from cave
- Reanimation,
- Task demonstrating skills
Hungary
was represented by the Nuclear Power Plant Fire Service
team in the competition, and they came eighth. The fact
that the Italian first aid equipment is different from
the Hungarian standard equipment made the tasks difficult
to perform, nevertheless the members of the team gave
the impression of a well-prepared team, which is confirmed
by the fact that they happened to be better than the
first Spanish team at 5 tasks.
The member of the team are:
- István Suplitz
- József Farkas
- Zsolt Lesák
- Péter Lovászi
- János Hahn
The competition finished with a 9-km torch-light procession
on the evening of 25 June, where many thousand people
demonstrated their respect for this noble initiation.
Let me finish this short memoir with one of the organisation's
principle:
"You have just one life, stand on your guard!!"

Fire
Protection The Most Successful Team
This
year the national first aid competition was organised
on 07 June in Fonyód. The competitors of Paks Nuclear
Power Plant Fire Service achieved the highest scores
in the adult category with a lead of 16 points, becoming
the most successful team of the competition. They couldn't
come first, as their achievements were scored out of
competition. The members of the Paks team achieving
the highest score, 325 points, are the following: József
Farkas, János Haán, Zsolt Lesták, Péter Lovászi, István
Suplicz.
The competition was opened by Dr István Mártai, chairman
of the jury and started at 9 o'clock. There were about
53 teams altogether competing in three categories; primary
and secondary school students with 20-20 teams, and
adults
with 13 teams. The national contention went on until
4 o'clock in the afternoon and the teams had to compete
according to strict rules and give evidence of their
knowledge and skills at 20 stations. Among the 5 professional,
9 theoretical, 3 traffic rule related and 1 skill related
stations there were 2 relaxation stations. The performance
of the different tasks required high quality accomplishment.
The professional part included different accident situations,
where injury imitations, injury symptom demonstrations
and the patients' role-plays were lifelike. Competitors
had to be careful, paying special attention to everything
as it had a great importance to clear all the circumstances.
The jury was very strict while giving scores and assessing
the way the ambulance
was informed the time and accuracy of providing the
signs and information. The results achieved at the professional
stations were given emphases during the assessment.
The Paks team was very good at the traffic rule related
stations, they won extra award in the pedestrian-related
and cyclist-related tasks. They turned out to be the
best at teamwork and coordination as well.
This year the Nuclear Power Plant Fire Service had very
little time to prepare. They were preparing mainly on
their own that's why their result are so praiseworthy.
They received assistance in practice from András Agócs
and József Feil, Ambulance Service employees and István
Schreiner, head of fire and technical rescue helped
them with theory preparation.
Tolna
county teams gave evidence of their good performance
as Primary School No 5 from Szekszárd came second, I
Béla Secondary Grammar and Informatics School came fourth.
The Paks Nuclear Power Plant Fire Service team became
the most successful and best team in the adult category
with325 points.
The excellent team has an opportunity to compete on
an international level as they were invited to take
part in the international Red Cross first aid competition
in Solferino, Italy, where their colleagues previously
achieved great success.

One
second lost them the gold medal
The
Paks Nuclear Power Plant fire service team of ten people
came second in the national facility fire services'
competition. It was the third silver medal won by the
Atomix Ltd. fire service besides the three gold medals
in the history of the competition.
Paks-Hajdúszoboszló
The 7th Flórián Pess Cup was organised in Hajdúszoboszló
last weekend. This time thirty-two teams, among them
the Atomix Ltd. that is the Paks Nuclear Power Plant
fire service team, took part in the national facility
fire services' competition. So far the team from Paks
has always been among the leaders, three times even
they have won the competition. István Schreiner, head
of the fire extinguishing and technical rescue operations
said they had been working really hard to prepare for
the competition, even they held an intramural competition
with the three shift groups. Only the best could get
among the ten members of the competing team. There were
three tasks to do; two assemblies, and a relay at the
weekend in Hajdúszoboszló. The Atomix Ltd. fire service
team performed all the three tasks extremely well nevertheless
it wasn't enough to win the cup. They just lost by 0.3
sec in the dividing branch assembly and by 0.4 sec in
the low-powered engine assembly. They arrived at the
finish just one second later than the winner Fire Service
and Technical rescue Ltd, this way they came second
according to the total score losing by 1.3 second altogether.
The members of the team were: András Apró, János Hahn,
István Kovács, János Lacza, Tibor Mikolics, Rajmung
Pesztericz, Tamás Szabó, Zoltán Szabó, Ferenc Széles
and Ferenc Viniczai.

Twenty-five years, further and further challenges
He
has been always attracted by new tasks
In
recognition of his course of life the Home Secretary
promoted Lajos Zelei to fireman major out of turn. The
Major, who has had this profession for a quarter of
century, - although he is a pensioner - is still working
for the institutional fire department of the nuclear
power plant.
He
worked at a pharmaceutical factory, airport, and for
twenty-five years Lajos Zelei has served as a fireman,
who was taken to this career as well, because he has
liked the challenges, has been attracted by extraordinary
things. By the way, at his decision it was also considered
that he liked the working hours, two off-days after
the twenty-four hours' duty, which was preferable, as
he was just building a house. He had a very interesting
job as the signalman of the Fire Service of the Capital,
could help a lot of people.
-
'While working, man incapacitates his emotions, does
his duty to the best of his knowledge. Then comes the
dazed condition, when he has time to think over what
has happened' he says about his work. At the intelligence
centre several colleagues of his entered for a college,
unsuccessfully. At that time he made up his mind to
try it himself as well. He was admitted to enrol with
the second best score, overcame all the obstacles with
success. The invitation arrived on the diploma transmission:
to work for the fire department of the nuclear power
plant. They settled down in Dunaszentgyörgy, where,
of course, he joined the voluntary fire service. Besides
he does gardening with pleasure, is the most proud of
his fruit trees, and if he would like to relax, he angles.
After a reorganization he decided to retire, shortly
afterwards his commander told him he expected his return.
He said yes with pleasure, since he likes not only his
job, but the collective as well. He is the chairman
by seniority at the institutional fire department operated
by Atomix Ltd. Their team is well-prepared, and they
have to stand on alert permanently, keep their level
and train themselves continuously. During the trainings
Lajos Zelei is reckoned on time after time, since he
is very experienced, has always liked to deal with people
and forward the knowledge that has been already possessed
by him to the younger.
Lajos Zelei
He was born in Tiszadob on 17th May 1948, acquired the
degree of fire fighting works engineer in 1983 at the
Ybl Miklós Architectural and Technical College. His
wife, Erzsébet Gyurkó, is a chemist technician, a laboratory
assistant at the Paks Nuclear Power Plant. They have
two daughters: Réka is 26 years old, works for Baranya
County ÁNTSZ. Márta is 21 years old, an undergraduate
at the Technical University.
