Red Cross Memorial Competition 24-27 June 2004

Solferino-Castiglione

Similarly to the previous years, the memorial competition and torchbearers’ procession organized in memory of the Solferino battle – establishment of Red Cross – was hold again this year, in which the team of the Nuclear Power Plant Fire Service represented Hungary for third time.
The competition consisted of 12 stations and three parts. The theoretical questions were tests about mainly the conventions regulating the international role of the Red Cross, its organizational structure, its role played in case of catastrophic situations and conflicts of war.
Exercises of skilfulness ranged from mounting electrical extension cables to getting over on a water course with obstacles.
The professional exercises were two persons’ complex revival, searching with a dog, slalom course for an ambulance, transport of an injured person with a stretcher in difficult ground, rescue of a drowning man, elimination of an accident situation.
In the competition 19 teams took part: German, Scottish, Spanish, Finnish, Austrians, French, Latvian and, of course, Italian.
The competition was won by an Italian team prior to the Austrian and the German. Our team finished the competition in the 7th place, which is especially honourable, because four Italian teams acquired placed prior to us.
List of the team: Frigyes Lepp, András Apró, Gábor Jákli, Tamás Szabó, Ferenc Viniczai.
The team was prepared and trained by Ferenc Bán captain of appliance and József Feil ambulance nurse.
On Saturday evening as the event closing a procession was organized for torchbearers in memory of the bloody Solferinó battle on 24th June 1859. Almost 7,000 persons marched with torches in the about 12 km distance from Solferinó to Castiglione under their own national flags, singing, cheerfully, nicely demonstrating the power of the idea of Red Cross, the human helpfulness and unselfishness.
We returned home on Sunday, being rich in experiences and suntanned due to the glittering Italian sunshine.
