It Doesn’t Depend on Fortune Alone

Tolna County’s Disaster Prevention Administration and Tolna County’s Fire Association arranged its county-level fire-fighting competition on the sport ground of Atomerőmű Sport Egyesület (Nuclear Power Plant’s Sports Club). The contest was proclaimed in three events, i.e. mounting of a small engine-powered 800 litres/min. capacity fire extinguisher, relay race on a distance of 4x100 meters, and 100-meter long track of obstacles. Individual performance was also evaluated in the last event. PA Rt’s Service Fire Brigade came away with the palm in the combined contest, with the host, Professional Local Government Fire Dept. of Paks, being placed second, Dombóvár third and Szekszárd fourth. For scoring the best individual performance, Tamás Szabó was awarded with the special prize of the Mayor’s Office, Paks. Recent years prove that the team of the Nuclear Power Plant’s Fire Brigade, if and when enters a fire race, scores good places. National and International Fire Competition ‘Ödön Széchenyi’ is arranged on a bi-yearly basis, where they are usually placed fifth or sixth. In the worst case, they finished second in the national competitions arranged every year for service fire brigades. According to Fire & Technical Rescue Head István Schreiner, their success depends on several factors, namely they were the first in Hungary to lay down a stringent array of physical and mental requirements taken into consideration as early as for new admissions. In addition, a professional sports teacher trains members of the fire personnel on a daily basis and works with selected fire competitors along a special training program. A certified yoga instructor is in charge of maintaining the personnel’s positive mental attitude; besides, all employees of the Power Plant are instructed in how to relax. An individual training program is compiled for every one on the fire team, taking physique and natural endowments into consideration on the basis of medical examinations undertaken twice a year. With such a carefully prepared training program and tough preparatory work, one can surely say that success doesn’t depend on fortune alone.
