Fighting
Disasters for the Safety of People!
“To
know that wit is limited and will is faint,
To know that I’m at the mercy of blind chance,
And yet to believe with stubborn faith
In what I do cannot be nothing.”
(An Untitled Poem by Ede Teller)
International
Conference on Disaster Prevention was held in Kiskunfélegyháza,
7 through 12 September 2005.
Local government officials of Kiskunfélegyháza and the
local Fire Brigades undertook organization and arrangement
of the Conference, this time the fourth one.
Paying
a visit to the Nuclear Power Plant of Paks (PA Rt.)
was an outing program offered by the trade Conference
this year.
PA Rt’s Information and Visitor Center received 23 Hungarian
guests and 52 guests from foreign countries on 8 September
2005. First, they were briefed on the daily program,
namely:
Demonstration lecture on the Nuclear Power Plant of
Paks by Safety Director, István Radnóti.
Introduction of emergency management capabilities of
the Power Plant by Head of Industrial Safety Division,
Gábor Volent.
Then viewing the exhibits on show in the Visitor Center
and bus touring the Plant’s area.
Introduction of the work of the Fire Brigade of the
Nuclear Power Plant by Fire Chief Péter Bőhm, followed
by an alpine rescue exercise by the fire rescue service
team.

The
guests experienced lots of things that were interesting
and sometimes new for them, which was confirmed by a
flood of questions they raised. Also, they spoke highly
of the Fire Brigade’s performance. Lecture delivered
by Fire Chief Péter Böhm was thought provoking among
the audience as the Fire Brigade of the Nuclear Power
Plant has challenges to meet in their work yet totally
unknown for other fire departments.

Demonstration
by the Fire Brigade scored success, and was welcomed
by the guests with applause.
Growing in useful pieces of experience gained, the participants
found the day spent at the Power Plant valuable and
returned to Kiskunfélegyháza to go on with the agenda
of the trade days and commemorate with respects the
firemen who died in the terrorist attack resulting in
the collapse of the World Trade Center’s twin tower
on 11 September 2001.
