Csongrád
County Defense Board visit to the Power Plant
Members
on the Csongrád County Defense Board were on visit to
the Nuclear Power Plant on 22 September. Besides the
guests from Csongrád, mayors as well as members on the
Tolna County Defense Board also took part in the program
that consisted of a visit to the Power Plant, trade
demonstration and lectures.

In the Nuclear Power Plant’s Information and Visitor
Center, dr. Szilvia Kovács, Mrs. Frank, Chairwoman of
Tolna County General Meeting and Defense Board, József
Ott, Deputy Chairman of Csongrád County General Meeting,
and István Hamvas, deputy CEO, Engineering, PA Rt. welcomed
those present. As a solemn part of the program, Fire
Colonel István Velencei was congratulated on the occasion
of his retirement. Then István Hamvas and Gábor Volent,
Head of Industrial Safety Division, gave information
on PA Rt’s tasks and strategic plans set for 2005 and
the Power Plant’s accident prevention capabilities.
Dr. Szilvia Kovács, Mrs. Frank delivered a lecture under
the title “Tolna County Defense Board’s Nuclear Accident
Prevention Tasks, Responsibilities and Opportunities
Within the Scheme of Defense Administration”.

While visiting
the Power Plant, the guest could get an insight view
of its operations through the visitor corridor in Block
4 and the turbine hall.
The program went on with a hazardous substance-caused
loss prevention demonstration by the Fire Brigade of
the Nuclear Power Plant. Firemen simulated an accident
situation where a 1 m3 IBC container, containing ammonium
hydroxide, was supposed to fall down while being hoisted
and become damaged. The spills of hazardous substance
were inhaled by the trolley operator, which made him
faint and lose consciousness. In addition to neutralization
and precipitation of the substance by water jet, the
firemen set about to rescue the injured out of the contaminated
plant area and put the area under blockade. Then applying
a protective water curtain, they prevented the dangerous
gas from spreading on, and using a Vetter pipe plug,
impeded the gas from getting into the water piping system.
An acid pump was used to pump out the little amount
of dangerous liquid that could enter the sewerage.
When
the exercise was over, guests could see local disinfection
of the protective clothing, performed in the disinfection
cabin of the Plant’s accident prevention section, and
inspect the disinfection station, as well. Finally,
chairpersons of the two counties’ General Meetings were
elevated in a basket to take pleasure in the view.
