Visit of a Professor in Disaster Management

As a guest of the National Directorate General for Disaster Management, Dr Ronald Barham, the Professor of the Built Environment Department of the Middle Lancheshire University in England visited the Paks Nuclear Power Plant on 14 February 2007.

Mr Barham has been researching and analyzing disaster events occurred and reported about the lessons of such events worldwide in the framework of lectures and seminars for a long time. Having arrived in Hungary he held lectures in Budapest and then visited the Paks Nuclear Power Plant and the Directorate for Disaster Management of Tolna County in Szekszárd.

In the Paks Nuclear Power Plant Professor Dr Ronald Barham and the accompanying experts, as well as Csaba Csendes, the Head of Section of Human Resources and Education of the National Directorate General for Disaster Management and Antal Mácsai, the Head of the Directorate for Disaster Management of Tolna County were received by Gábor Volent Head of Industrial Safety Division and Péter Bőhm Fire Commander.

Following the information meeting held at the NPP Information and Visitor’s Centre, the guests visited the plant area where they inspected the control room of Block 4, the turbine hall and the reactor hall of Block 2 and after that, at the end of their programme, they acquainted themselves with the NPP Fire Service. Here Fire Commander Péter Bőhm presented them the equipment and staff of the facility fire service and informed them about the diversified activities of the fire service including, in particular, their tasks to be done in disaster management and technical rescue as well as about the preparedness and achievements of the staff.

At the end his visit Professor Ronald Barham spoke admiringly about his experiences obtained in the Nuclear Power Plant and the Fire Service. He said that the training and education system and the performance evaluation system of the Fire Service made a deep impression on him. In his Department, which is of international rank and outlook, he wishes to convey the information he obtained here to the fire-fighters, experts and executives concerned. He was pleased to acknowledge that, albeit he had already visited many places and had obtained information from many places, here he could meet novelties and hear about much fresh information.
